Explore what stays and changes
When work reaches beyond one room
Keep. Change.
Investigate.
Opening a kitchen to a living area or changing several rooms can affect structure and building systems. Describe the result you want before deciding which wall or opening must change.
An illustrative scope example
- Keep
- The garden connection and selected existing finishes.
- Change
- An easier route between the kitchen and shared living space.
- Investigate
- Wall structure, services, floor transitions and how retained finishes can be protected.
Living through the work
Plan for daily life,
as well as the layout.
Discuss which areas and services would be affected, and whether any part of the home can remain in use. Staying at home is a project-specific decision.
- Cooking & bathing
- Which essential rooms and services would be unavailable?
- Household routes
- How would people safely enter and move through the home?
- Construction access
- Where would the team, materials and equipment need access?
- Temporary arrangements
- What would pets, belongings and daily routines need?
A scope you can compare
Define the boundaries.
List the rooms involved, what remains, related system work and assumptions about concealed conditions. Ask how a new finding or requested change would be described and reviewed before agreeing the work.
Before we talk
Bring what you already have.
You do not need to resolve every question before contacting us. Photos and plans can help the conversation; neither is required to begin.
- Keep & change
- A short list of what works now and what you want to improve.
- Room connections
- Wider photos and records of previous work, if you have them.
- Living arrangements
- Who uses the home and which rooms or services need to remain available.
Before you begin
Good questions.
A useful start.
Can we remove a wall?
That needs review of the structure and any services affected. A wall’s appearance does not establish whether or how it can be removed.
Can we remain at home?
That depends on the scope, safety, access and availability of essential rooms and services. Discuss arrangements before assuming the home will remain usable.
What if hidden conditions are found?
Existing homes can reveal conditions that were not visible at the start. Clarify how findings, proposed work and any cost or schedule changes will be documented and reviewed in your project agreement.
Do we need to know every detail before we talk?
No. Start with the rooms involved, the result you want and what you hope to keep. Open questions can be identified as the scope develops.
